Patient travel

If you have received treatment, you can apply for financial support for your travel. If you require arranged transport to attend treatment, you may be entitled to an organised journey.

If you have been a patient, travel companion or close relative of a patient, you can apply for reimbursement after you have completed a journey. The application must be submitted no later than six months after your treatment.

To receive reimbursement, the distance to the treatment location must be more than ten kilometres each way and cross multiple fare zones using public transport.

Apply for travel support

By logging into Helsenorge, you can apply digitally for support for your journey to and from publicly approved treatment.

If you do not wish to use the digital service, you can apply for travel expense support by submitting a paper travel expense claim form to Pasientreiser HF. You can find the paper application form with your healthcare provider or on Helsenorge.

Need for organised travel?

If, due to your health or traffic reasons, you cannot travel by public transport, drive yourself, or be driven, you may be entitled to organised travel. Organised travel (requisitioned travel) is when Pasientreiser in your local health authority arranges the journey for you and selects the most appropriate mode of transport.

On the day of travel, you should allow some waiting time based on how far you need to travel. When possible, you will travel with other patients. You only pay a co-payment for the journey if you do not have an exemption or free pass.

Self-service solution on Helsenorge

By logging into Helsenorge, you can find an overview of and information about future organised patient journeys. You can also book, change, cancel, and confirm organised journeys.

If you cannot or do not wish to do this digitally, you can contact Pasientreiser in your local health authority

Book your journey yourself

If you need organised travel due to your health or traffic reasons, you can obtain a travel certificate and book the journey yourself, or travel by car and receive financial support for the journey and additional expenses covered.

If you need a travel certificate due to your health, it is your healthcare provider who should issue the travel certificate. If there are traffic-related reasons for the certificate, such as no public transport available on the route you need to travel, the travel certificate will be issued by Pasientreiser.

A travel certificate can apply to single journeys or for a period of up to one year. The travel certificate is valid for journeys to and from the treatment locations specified in the certificate.

You will pay a co-payment for the journey if you do not have a free pass or exemption.
