Longyearbyen Hospital

The hospital in Longyearbyen is an emergency medical preparedness hospital. Unlike hospitals on the mainland, the hospital provides both primary and specialist healthcare services. During the day, Longyearbyen hospital serves as a medical office for the residents of Svalbard. Additionally, the hospital ensures healthcare services for all those travelling in and around the archipelago and the adjacent marine areas of the Barents Sea.

When you are staying in Svalbard, there are several things that operate differently than on the mainland. This also applies to healthcare services.

In Svalbard, you have only a limited healthcare offer.

We offer:

  • Doctor's appointment.
  • Emergency assistance.
  • Acute conditions that cannot be treated are transferred to UNN Tromsø or another relevant hospital on the mainland.
  • Only life-saving stabilisation surgery is offered before transfer to the mainland. This requires a surgeon to be available.
  • Dentist appointment. Additionally, a dental hygienist is present 2-4 times a year and an orthodontist 3-5 times a year.
  • Health centre. A midwife is responsible for the follow-up of pregnant women and children of school age. A school nurse follows up on schoolchildren.
  • Physiotherapy.
  • Standard X-rays.
  • Plastering for fractures that do not require surgical intervention.

The hospital cannot issue all types of health certificates (e.g. diving certificate, polar bear guard, guide), but assists with certain job-related certificates, such as a driving licence.

Longyearbyen Hospital has fewer services than other Norwegian hospitals

Please pay particular attention to the following:

  • No psychologist.
  • No delivery room.
  • No CT or MRI.
  • Limited capacity for medical investigations (we have similar services to what you can receive from a general practitioner/emergency care on the mainland).
  • No planned surgeries.
  • Transfer of emergency patients to the mainland by air ambulance depends on weather conditions and available flights.
